ST. GABRIEL'S SCHOOL
In August of 2012, St. Gabriel's school opened its doors, providing 116 seventh and eighth grade students an opportunity to attend high school. With their own school building, all-day classes became possible. Each year, as the students advanced, an additional grade was added. On October 8, 2012, the Diocese of Cap-Haitien recognized St., Gabriel's as an independent Catholic school.
Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Fontaine, a rural community of extreme poverty, is located in the northern part of the Central Plateau. It is five miles from its nearest neighbor, the town of Pignon, and 100 miles from Port-au-Prince. Thirty-five percent of children born in Fontaine die of malnutrition. After sixth grade, if a student wanted to continue his or her education, they would have to walk, two hours each way, to the secondary school in Pignon.
